Do Wall Decals Stick to Textured Walls?

If you have textured walls, you may have already discovered that not every peel-and-stick product works well on them.

The good news is that Lollistix wall decals can adhere to many common painted wall textures, including orange peel, knockdown texture, and painted cinder block.

Unlike traditional vinyl decals, Lollistix decals are made from a soft, flexible polyester fabric material that can conform to many lightly and moderately textured surfaces.

Will Lollistix Stick to Textured Walls?

We have tested Lollistix fabric wall decals on several common wall surfaces, including:

• Orange peel texture

• Knockdown texture

• Painted cinder block

In our testing, all three surfaces successfully held the decals.

Of course, every wall is different. Texture depth, paint finish, wall condition, dust, residue, humidity, and application can all affect adhesion.

For that reason, we recommend testing your specific wall if you are unsure.

Why Fabric Wall Decals Work Well on Many Textured Walls

Traditional vinyl decals tend to be relatively smooth and rigid. On a textured wall, portions of the adhesive may sit on top of the raised areas instead of making contact with the entire surface.

Lollistix decals are made from a flexible polyester fabric that can better follow the contours of many textured walls.

That flexibility helps the decal make more contact with the painted surface.

The matte fabric finish also gives Lollistix decals a soft appearance that can look more like artwork painted onto the wall rather than a shiny sticker sitting on top of it.

What Types of Walls Can Lollistix Be Applied To?

Lollistix decals are intended for properly primed and painted walls.

They can work well on many smooth and textured painted surfaces, but we do not recommend applying them directly to unfinished drywall, bare cinder block, raw wood, or other porous or dusty surfaces.

Unsealed materials can prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.

What About Orange Peel Walls?

Orange peel is one of the most common wall textures found in homes, particularly in newer construction.

Lollistix decals have performed successfully on orange peel texture in our testing.

Because orange peel texture can vary from very subtle to quite pronounced, results can still differ from wall to wall. A lightly textured painted wall generally gives the adhesive more contact than an extremely rough surface.

What About Knockdown Texture?

Knockdown walls have larger raised and recessed areas than typical orange peel texture.

We have successfully applied Lollistix decals to painted knockdown walls as well.

As with any textured surface, the depth of the texture matters. Very heavy or irregular textures provide less surface area for adhesive contact and should be tested before installing a large decal.

Can Wall Decals Stick to Cinder Block?

Lollistix decals can adhere to painted cinder block, and we have successfully tested the material on this surface.

Bare cinder block is different.

Unpainted masonry is porous and dusty, so we do not recommend applying the decals directly to unfinished block.

The surface should be properly sealed, primed, and painted first.

Does Paint Finish Matter?

It can.

Our material manufacturer notes that certain combinations of textured surfaces and eggshell paint may occasionally create adhesion problems.

We have personally installed Lollistix decals on eggshell-painted walls many times with excellent results, but paint formulations vary considerably between manufacturers.

Other finishes, additives, stain-resistant coatings, and specialty paints can also affect how an adhesive performs.

That is why testing is the safest option when you are unsure about your particular wall.

Not Sure About Your Wall? Test It First.

Every wall is a little different.

Paint type, texture, age, previous cleaning products, and environmental conditions can all affect adhesion.

Before purchasing or installing a large wall decal, test a small piece of Lollistix material on the same wall where you plan to install your design.

Leave the sample in place for several days and occasionally check the edges. This gives you an opportunity to see how the material performs on your specific paint and texture before committing to a larger installation.

Why Wall Preparation Matters

Even a wall that is perfectly compatible with removable decals can have adhesion problems if the surface is dusty or covered with cleaning-product residue.

Before installing your decals, make sure your wall is completely clean, dry, and fully cured.

If your walls were recently painted, we recommend waiting at least 30 days before applying Lollistix decals.

Can I Put Wall Decals Above a Baby's Crib?

We do not recommend placing removable wall decals directly above a baby's crib in a position where a decal could fall into the sleeping area.

When properly applied, the likelihood of a Lollistix decal falling is low. However, no removable adhesive product can be guaranteed to remain attached under every possible condition.

Wall texture, paint, dust, humidity, cleaning residue, improper application, and other factors can affect adhesion.

When decorating a nursery, we recommend placing decals beside the crib or elsewhere on the wall rather than directly over the baby's sleeping area.

Will Lollistix Damage My Walls?

Lollistix decals are designed to be removable and renter-friendly when applied to properly primed, painted, and fully cured walls.

However, the condition of the paint underneath the decal matters.

If drywall was painted without primer, if paint is already peeling, or if the paint has not properly bonded to the wall, removing any adhesive product may lift loose paint.

For that reason, we cannot guarantee the condition of the underlying paint or wall surface.

So, Will Lollistix Stick to Your Wall?

For many customers with smooth, orange peel, knockdown, and other moderately textured painted walls, the answer is yes.

The most important factors are a properly painted surface, fully cured paint, a clean wall, and good installation.

And because no two walls are exactly alike, testing your wall before installing a large design is always the best way to know for sure.
